Foundation of Islam
Assalamualaikum and hi everyone!!
As you can read the title, today I am going to share with you all about the foundation of Islam. When I was in my foundation study, my classmates and I need to memorize one of the famous hadith. This week Usrah class topic is Ihsan, one of hadith content, by coincidence.

Islam is built on three main foundations, namely Iman, Islam and Ihsan. It was narrated on the authority of Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), who said:
"While we were one day sitting with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), there appeared before us a man dressed in extremely white clothes and with very black hair.
He (Jibril a.s) sat down close by the Prophet SAW and said. "O Muhammad! Inform me about Islam.". The Messenger of Allah said, "Islam is that you should testify that there is no deity except Allah and that Muhammad is His Messenger, that you should perform salah, pay the zakah, fast during Ramadan, and perform Hajj to the House, if you are able to do so."
(Jibril a.s) went on to say, "Inform me about Iman." He (the Messenger of Allah) answered, "It is that you believe in Allah and His angels and His Books and His Messengers and in the Last Day, and in qadar (fate), both in its good and in its evil aspect."
Then he (Jibril a.s) said, "Inform me about Ihsan." He (the Messenger of Allah) answered, "It is that you should serve Allah as though you could see Him, for though you cannot see Him yet (know that) He sees you." [Muslim]

From the hadith, it literally said that Islam is submission to the Oneness of Allah SWT, obey to the Allah's commands and abandon the prohibitions and fulfilling the obligatory pillars of Islam and following the teaching brought by our Prophet Muhammad SAW. The pillars of Islam are shahadah, perform salah, pay the zakah, fast during Ramadhan and perform Hajj.
Furthermore, Iman means agreeing with the faith of Iman in the heart, admitting it with the tongue and perceives the observance of obligatory acts as mandatory. I've explained a little bit about Pillars of Faith before. You can check it out here.
Next, I will make a further explanation about Ihsan as this is the topic in our Usrah class yesterday.
What does Ihsan mean?
Ihsan literally is excellence and perfection. In Islam terminology, Ihsan is that you worship Allah as if you were seeing Him, and even though you do not see Him, he certainly sees you. So Ihsan between servant and his Lord is his perfecting action, which Allah has made a duty upon him, that he does it correctly and sincerely for Allah Almighty, and by following the Messenger SAW. Treating well with people and good conduct are considered a great virtue in Islam either related to dunya or akhirah.
What are the aspects of Ihsan?
1. Worship (Ibadah)
- Ihsan is obligatory in worship as fulfilling the ibadah as Allah's command which are perform salah, fast, hajj and others perfectly. It means fulfill the conditions, pillars, sunnah and manners.
- Worship Allah as thought He sees to make sure the worship can be fulfilled well and perfecyly sincerely for Allah.
- "Worship Allah and associate nothing with Him, and to parents do good, and to relatives, orphans, the needy, the near neighbor, the neighbor farther away, the companion at your side, the traveler, and those whom your right hands possess. Indeed, Allah does not like those who are self-deluding and boastful." (An-Nisa':36)
- Concerning dealing nicely with all Allah's creation.
- The concept of Muslim being a person of quality where he does things in a very good manner resulting from his worship and muamalat.
- When one practices Ihsan with a heart filled with love of Allah then the resultant effect in him is that his whole being undergoes such a change that he becomes deserving of the Love of Allah as Quran says "And practise Ihsan. Truly, Allah loves the doers of Ihsan." (Al-Baqarah:195)
- Worshipping Allah devoutly and sincerely for Allah.
- Obey Allah's orders and avoid the prohibition sincerely.
- Received reward from Allah.
- Practicing the attributes of good manners (mahmudah).
- Maintain good relationship between family, neighbors and the community.
- Harmonious life.
- Grateful for the blessings of Allah SWT.
